SAKURA Cherry Blossoms 2015

Hi all,

Spring is arriving to Japan. This season is probably the best one for the most people, who visit Japan. Why? The reason is it is the season of Cherry Blossoms. The vast majority of Japanese people love to see Cherry Blossoms. They often have parties under Cherry trees during the daytime and evening. They eat gorgeous Lunch (obento), drink alcohol (Beer, Sake, etc…), some of them dance and sing.

This year, the prediction of Cherry blossom period is as follows;
(http://www.jnto.go.jp/sakura/eng/index.php)

In most of the places, Cherry Blossom’s peak arrives about a week after it begins to bloom. And it finishes blooming about 2 weeks after the peak. The very best period to see cherry blossom is between about 3 days before the peak and the day of peak. One reason why Japanese people love Cherry Blossoms so much is that beautiful bloom does not last long time and it reminds us the fragility of human life.

I used to live in Tokyo and Kyoto (not at the same time). Meguro Gawa in Tokyo and Tetsugaku no michi (Way of Philosophy) in Kyoto are my favourites.

That’s all about it for today. Should you have any questions, requests or comments, please leave a message. I am very happy if you could give me some advices to improve this blog so more people can visit here and get information on what they need.

Bye!

  1. Hello Kaz. Thank you for the information! It sounds like the cherry blossom parties are sort of like picnics. Is it okay for tourists to join in as well and have a picnic alongside locals?

  2. Thank you very much for the comment!

    Of course yes! They don't mind about the tourists and some of them might even invite you to their parties, because foreigner Hamami (Cherry Blossom watching) people are probably quite rare and those locals are tend to drunk. Some locals visit the park or other Hanami places a lot earlier than their party time, in order to keep their spaces. So if you have a picnic with a large number of people, it would be good idea to take sheets with you to the place and keep your room, some time before your party begins.

  3. Thank you, Kaz! I have one more question. Do the Hanami parties only happen on the day of the peak or do they happen throughout the whole cherry blossom season?

  4. Hi Sarah, people have Hanami parties throughout the whole cherry blossom season, but as you can imagine, the peak days are very clouded. They have parties during the day time and night time. Light up cherry blossom ”Yozakura (night cherry blossom)” is also very beautiful. (FYI) "Rikugien Garden" http://teien.tokyo-park.or.jp/en/rikugien/index.html Light up will be started from 19th of March to 5th of April. Entrance fee 300 yen for adult, free for kids. image & map: http://hanami.walkerplus.com/detail/ar0313e26443/
